Remembering Marc Kerbs — The Visionary Behind Modernized AK

The firearms industry lost one of its true innovators on July 5, 2026, with the passing of Marc Krebs. While many gunsmiths built rifles, Marc built legacies. Through Krebs Custom, he transformed the Kalashnikov platform from a rugged surplus rifle into a refined, modern fighting tool, influencing manufacturers, military professionals, law enforcement, competitors, and enthusiasts alike. His passing leaves an unmistakable void, but his fingerprints will remain on the AK platform for generations to come.

From Gunsmith to Industry Icon

Marc’s journey began with a professional gunsmithing education at Lassen College, where he studied under master gunsmith Bob Dunlap before opening his own shop in 1985. Over the following years, he worked on thousands of firearms, honing the craftsmanship that would later define his career. His reputation first exploded in the custom pistol world, where his distinctive “snakeskin” checkering became so respected it was eventually emulated throughout the industry.

Elevating the Kalashnikov

In 2000, Marc turned his attention to the rifle platform that would define his life’s work: the AK.

At a time when many viewed the Kalashnikov as little more than an inexpensive surplus rifle, Marc saw unrealized potential. Krebs Custom became synonymous with precision, reliability, and thoughtful engineering. His improved safety selectors, enhanced sighting systems, refined controls, muzzle devices, and complete rifle builds demonstrated that the AK could be every bit as ergonomic and capable as any modern fighting rifle while retaining the legendary reliability that made the platform famous.

Whether discussing the KV-13, the PD-18, or countless custom rifle builds, one theme remained constant… Marc never modified an AK simply for appearance. Every change served a purpose. Every improvement solved a problem. Every rifle reflected decades of experience behind the bench and on the range.

His influence extended far beyond his own shop. Many of the ergonomic improvements now considered standard on modern AK-pattern rifles can trace their roots back to ideas Marc championed years before they became mainstream.

More Than a Builder

Those fortunate enough to meet Marc quickly realized he wasn’t interested in hype. He valued craftsmanship over marketing, function over fashion, and education over ego. Whether speaking with first-time AK owners or seasoned professionals, he shared his knowledge generously and never stopped refining his craft.

In an industry constantly chasing the next trend, Marc remained focused on making firearms better, not louder.

His Legacy Lives On

Marc Krebs leaves behind far more than a respected company. He leaves behind an entire philosophy of firearm design centered on practical performance, uncompromising quality, and relentless innovation. Every Krebs Custom rifle in the field, every shooter who benefits from one of his innovations, and every gunsmith inspired by his work stands as part of that legacy.

The firearms community mourns the loss of a master craftsman, an engineer, and a teacher.

Rest easy, Marc. Thank you for proving what the AK could become, and for reminding us what true craftsmanship looks like.
