Sometimes too much is not a good thing, and that’s exactly why the Minimalist Nessmuk knife by CRKT works so well. This compact minimalist knife gives you just what you need and nothing you don’t. From its easily carried and concealable size to its top-heavy blade and its barely-there handle, the Nessmuk shed anything not deemed practical for everyday use. With this small wonder in hand, I explored its every facet and found a true workhorse with a small footprint.
Exploring its Unique Design
The Nessmuk compact design makes it ideal for easy concealability or even around-the-neck carry. Not knowing it was as small as it was, it threw me by surprise when I opened it from its box. However, don’t take that as a negative. In fact, I was truly impressed by its unique design. It’s almost like parts of two dissimilar knives were combined to create the Nessmuk, and they work incredibly well together.
The drop-point blade contrasts with the ultra-thin (in width) handle, but again, it just works well. When in its sheath, knife access is easily achievable with the protruding handle portions that secure your fingers instantly.

Materials and Construction
The Nessmuk offers full-tang construction composed of 12C27 Steel. The Stonewash finished blade takes up two-thirds of the entire knife’s design. Its total cutting-edge length runs just under three inches. The Micarta handle is very stout with three finger indentations for a secure grip. Two pins hold the Micarta handle snugly to the 12C27 steel tang extension.

The Nessmuk comes with a Thermoplastic black sheath that offers multiple attachment points and includes adjustable cordage for hanging the knife around your neck.

First-Hand Use Reactions
Now, if you’re like me, you may judge this knife wrongly before handling it. At first sight, it appears like it would be hard to hold with its slender handle and three distinct finger holds. Believe me, it was the exact opposite. My fingers found the indentations naturally, along with my thumb landing on the jimping across the lower back spine. My pinky finger floated off the knife, which allowed me better control when I rotated my wrist.
Overall, the Nessmuk truly became an extension of my hand and arm, with the blade being the only visible part protruding from my closed fist. The more I held the Nessmuk, the more at-home it felt within my grip. This knife surprised me with its ultra-comfortable hold.

But Can it Cut?
The Nessmuk was sharp right out of the box. With its beefy tip, I had my doubts concerning its puncturing ability. However, my doubts were quickly squashed as the knife’s tip penetrated a length of distressed leather without fail. From there, I applied just the slightest pressure, and the blade took over.
Afterward, slice after slice was effortless. I attributed control of the knife and precision of the cuts to the handle’s design, with my fingers smoothly controlling the Nessmuk’s movements through the material.

Shedding the Bells and Whistles
The Nessmuk knife is an enigma. On the one hand, by appearance alone, this knife may not seem comfortable to hold, let alone to complete the cutting task at hand. On the other hand, it performs remarkably well once you pick it up and utilize it as it was intended to be used. It offers a true minimalistic design, but in no way does that impede its in-use performance.
