Reno Man Acts in Self-Defense After Juvenile Opens Fire, Injuring Bystander
STEAD, NV — A self-defense shooting Sunday night at the Sky Vista Commons Apartments in Reno’s Stead neighborhood left a juvenile suspect and a female bystander hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Reno Police Department (RPD).
The incident unfolded around 8:10 p.m. when RPD officers responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a juvenile male and an adult female with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to the hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
RPD’s investigation revealed that the juvenile suspect attempted to shoot an adult male during a confrontation, but missed, inadvertently striking a nearby female bystander. In response, the intended target retrieved his own firearm and, acting in self-defense, shot the juvenile suspect, who remained armed at the time.
Both the man and the juvenile suspect are cooperating with investigators, and police have confirmed that all responsible parties have been accounted for, with no ongoing threat to public safety. Following the incident, one of the injured individuals reportedly drove to a nearby location to call for help before receiving medical assistance.
As authorities continue to investigate, they plan to release additional information as it becomes available.
This incident underscores the need for responsible firearm use and preparedness in situations where self-defense may be necessary. When facing an armed threat, rapid defensive action can be critical to protecting oneself and others. Lawful self-defense requires adherence to local regulations, and cooperation with law enforcement is essential to ensure a thorough investigation.
