9 Dead, 25+ Injured In Canada Mass Shooting, Suspect Only Identified As “Gunperson”

Nine people have died following a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in British Columbia. The suspect is also deceased from an apparent self-inflicted wound, leaving more than 25 others injured in Canada’s deadliest shooting event since 2020.

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. (4-minute read) — The peaceful landscape of the Canadian Rockies was transformed into a scene of unimaginable horror on Tuesday. A shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School left six people dead on-site, with another victim passing away during transport to the hospital. The violence extended beyond the school grounds, as RCMP officers discovered two additional victims deceased at a nearby home believed to be connected to the attack.

RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed that investigators have identified the suspect but have not yet released a name or a potential motive; however the suspect has been called “the gunperson”, a term that we have never heard before.

The attack, which injured more than 25 others, is Canada’s deadliest mass shooting since the 2020 Nova Scotia rampage. For a community of just 2,700 people, the impact is personal. Mayor Darryl Krakowka, a resident of 18 years, noted that the town is like a “big family,” and it is likely he knew every one of the victims.

The Legislative Fallout and National Response

This tragedy occurs against a backdrop of increasingly strict Canadian firearm regulations. The federal government has recently broadened bans on firearms categorized as “assault weapons,” and this event is likely to spark renewed debate over the efficacy of these measures. Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended all international travel to address the crisis, while B.C. Premier David Eby has called on the province to “look after the people of Tumbler Ridge” during this period of profound grief.

As the investigation continues, local clergy and counselors are working with families at the community recreation center, where the difficult process of victim notification and grief counseling is underway.

Safety Tip: While Canada and the U.S. have different legal frameworks for firearm ownership, the tactical reality of an active shooter remains the same. If you are a parent or student, familiarize yourself with your school’s specific “Lockdown” and “Hold and Secure” protocols. In the initial minutes of an event, silence is your greatest asset; ensure your phone is on silent (not just vibrate) and stay away from windows and doors.
