To License or Not – The CCW Debate

With the growing number of states allowing constitutional or permitless carry, the question of why I should get a CCW permit has come up. While the ultimate argument stems back to our Second Amendment rights, there are still laws and processes we must navigate. Today, I want to talk about why I believe getting your concealed carry permit is still a good idea.

To License or Not – Reasons to Get Your CCW

The first reason is reciprocity. If you happen to travel to another state, you have the chance of that state recognizing your permit. This is especially important when traveling to states without a constitutional carry law. As always, it’s your responsibility to know what the gun laws are in the states you are traveling to.

The second reason is training. While most CCW classes are not exactly super deep in training, they do educate you on the laws you will be subject to. Knowing where you can carry and your state’s use-of-force laws are essential if you are going to be a responsible gun owner. For those fortunate enough, your class will at least cover basic marksmanship and include a live fire test.

Firearms Purchases

A third reason to have your CCW is that it can expedite a firearms purchase. In most states, the possession of a CCW permit allows you to avoid the NICS federal background check conducted during a gun purchase. This check can sometimes be time-consuming, and errors can occur, which could prevent you from making your purchase.

A fourth reason is that it can ease legal issues if you are forced to use your gun. Providing a CCW license as proof of your training can put you in a better light. You will be able to show that you are a responsible gun owner and took the time to get training on the laws surrounding firearms.

To License or Not

I am with you when you say that the entire nationwide permit and gun ownership laws are ridiculous. However, this is where we are right now, and we should do our best to play by the rules. While it is time-consuming, I believe it is still a good idea, regardless of where you live, to get your CCW permit.
