The Sig 1911 X Full .45 ACP

Few people may recall the days when Sig was an upstart with just a few guns in the lineup. Today, Sig is a mega manufacturer across the civilian, law enforcement, and military worlds. The core of their success has been precision manufacturing. Nowhere is that more evident than in their new 1911 X-Full. We’re excited about testing the Sig 1911 X-Full to see how it stands up to the hype.

The Sig 1911 X Full is a stainless steel, 45 ACP hammer-fired pistol with an optics-ready X Full slide. It comes with X-RAY3 day/night sights, a serrated flat trigger, custom engraved and checkered G10 grips, an extended slide release, and ambidextrous safety levers.

The 1911 Full Romeo X models feature a factory-installed ROMEO-X red-dot sight from Sig Electro-Optics. These optics are crafted from 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum featuring machined anti-reflection grooves on shooter-facing surfaces with distortion-free aspheric glass and a patent-pending Beryllium Copper flexure-arm adjustment system.

The ROMEO-X incorporates a high-efficiency point source red LED emitter with a 2 MOA dot / 32 MOA circle reticle, side-independent brightness adjustment buttons, 15 brightness settings, including night vision settings, and a side-mounted CR1632 battery compartment with a threaded battery cap so the optic does not need to be removed from the pistol for battery changes.

Additionally, the ROMEO-X offers a low deck height for standard-height iron sight co-witness, has a minimum continuous runtime of 20,000 hours at a medium brightness setting, and utilizes MOTAC (Motion Activated Illumination), MAGNETAC (Magnetic Activation), and DARC (Dark Adaptive Reticles & Coatings) technologies.

While the gun is obviously good-looking, this was not a beauty contest. Breaking it out on the range is a great experience. The first noteworthy point is the fit of the gun. That term is thrown around quite a bit, and I have even heard it used on guns that sound like maracas when they shake. This is not the case with the 1911 X Full.

These pistols are designed for defensive use, requiring a precarious balance between accuracy and reliability. Sig has struck a good balance in this area. The fit is excellent but not so tight that it affects reliability nor too loose that it affects accuracy. While I loathe shooting handguns from a bench, I wanted to check accuracy. At 25 yards, I could easily consistently shoot a 2½” group. I believe that after breaking in, and maybe with someone with younger eyes behind the trigger, it is capable of better groups.

Regardless, this is absolutely a solid performance for a defensive handgun. In a more fitting test, the gun ran well in close-quarter drills and single hand-on-steel shooting.

The mix of the grips, along with the checkering on the front of the grip, allowed me a very consistent purchase of the gun. It also gave me an anchor-like grip on the gun as I cycled through the 230-grain ball ammunition.

While a single-day trip to the range is no basis for long-term reliability, the 1911 X Full pistol ran with no malfunctions of any kind. While that may not seem to be noteworthy, the fact is that most semi-auto pistols require a break-in period. Yes, even those guns. This is especially true with 1911s.

Now granted, I had sufficiently lubed the gun and ran good ammo, but the fact I had no hiccups at all is indeed noteworthy. I ran a mix of ball and defensive loads, and the pistol ran whatever it was fed. The trigger was very nice, and following just a slight take-up, it broke in the three-pound range. Overall and in detail, the gun ran very well.
