Testing The Custom Lite Shallow Spool Finesse Spinning Reel

Testing The Custom Lite Shallow Spool Finesse Spinning Reel

When choosing a finesse fishing reel, there are three things that matter most: weight, gear ratio, and build quality. A finesse setup is all about precision and feel, so your reel needs to be light enough for all-day casting, balanced for subtle presentations, and built well enough to hold up over time. The Lew’s Custom Lite SS spinning reel checks those boxes.

Lightweight Reel, Consistent Feel

At just 6.7 ounces, this is Lew’s lightest premium spinning reel to date. That matters more than many anglers realize. Finesse fishing often means making hundreds of casts in a single outing. Over the course of a long day, even small weight differences add up, leading to wrist, forearm, and shoulder fatigue. A lightweight reel reduces that strain and helps anglers stay sharp and comfortable from the first cast to the last.

Despite shedding weight, the Custom Lite SS doesn’t sacrifice durability. It features 11 stainless steel bearings, a hybrid carbon drag system, and a titanium-coated line roller. The result is a reel that feels smooth under load and remains consistent fish after fish. It’s compact and lightweight, but it’s built with high-quality components designed to last.

Shallow Spool Design

The reason for the “SS” designation on this reel is the shallow spool design. This is a practical advantage that becomes obvious the moment you spool it up. Traditional deeper spools often require far more line than you’ll ever realistically use. The bottom portion of that line typically sits unused for months, only to become brittle or degraded before it ever sees water. That’s wasted line, wasted energy, and wasted money.

The shallow spool eliminates that issue. It allows you to spool just the amount of line you actually need for finesse applications. In my case, I typically run 100 yards of 10-pound fluorocarbon. With a 200-yard spool of line, I can fill two reels instead of just one. Over time, that adds up to significant savings, especially if you respool frequently. It’s a small design change that offers real-world benefits in both efficiency and cost.

Durable & Consistent

Durability is another strong point. After nearly a full season of use on multiple finesse setups, these reels have held up extremely well. They remain smooth, show minimal cosmetic wear, and continue to perform reliably. For anglers who fish hard and often, that kind of consistency matters.

The Lew’s Custom Lite SS sits firmly in the premium category of finesse spinning reels, and delivers performance and efficiency equal to its placement. For anglers serious about finesse fishing, it’s a well-balanced combination of lightweight design, thoughtful engineering, and long-term value.
