Strong Voice At The OWAA Board’s Table

The outdoor industry runs on storytellers. Some tell stories around campfires. Some tell them from duck blinds, trout streams, and mountain ridges. And some help shape the future of how those stories are told.

Athlon Untamed’s own Megan Plete Postol just added another impressive accomplishment to her resume after being elected to the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) Board of Directors.

The election comes at a landmark moment for the organization as OWAA prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Postol will officially begin her three-year term following a virtual onboarding session and the board’s August meeting in Madison, Wisconsin.

For anyone familiar with Megan’s work, the news probably falls somewhere between “well deserved” and “what took them so long?”

A Career Built in the Outdoors

Postol has spent more than a decade building a reputation as one of the outdoor industry’s most respected voices. As Lead Editor of Athlon Untamed, she helps steer content covering hunting, fishing, conservation, trapping, shooting sports, and the outdoor lifestyle. Before joining Athlon Untamed, she contributed to a long list of respected publications.

Based in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, Postol lives where many people vacation. The region’s endless opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, and outdoor recreation have helped fuel both her passion for the outdoors and the authenticity readers have come to expect from her work.

Leadership Beyond the Byline

This isn’t Postol’s first leadership role in the outdoor community.

She currently serves as a New York Ambassador for Artemis Sportswomen, a National Wildlife Federation initiative focused on mentoring and advancing women in hunting, fishing, conservation, and outdoor recreation.

Her previous board experience includes service with both the New York State Outdoor Writers Association and the New York Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers.

Throughout her career, she’s consistently advocated for mentorship, inclusion, and helping the next generation of outdoor communicators find their footing in an industry that continues to evolve at warp speed.

A Well-Earned Seat at the Table

According to Emily E. Long, Chair of the Board for Bleecker Street Publications, Postol’s election reflects both her talent and her growing influence within outdoor media.

“Megan represents everything we value in outdoor journalism. Integrity, expertise, passion for conservation, and a genuine commitment to growing the outdoor community,” Long said. “We are incredibly proud of her election to the OWAA Board of Directors. She is one of the brightest rising stars in the outdoor communications industry, and I have no doubt she will help shape the future of outdoor storytelling while honoring the traditions that have made OWAA such an important organization for nearly a century.”

Why This Matters

Founded in 1927, OWAA has spent nearly a century promoting ethical outdoor journalism, conservation, professional development, and mentorship. While the tools of storytelling have evolved from typewriters and film cameras to podcasts, YouTube channels, and social media feeds, the need for trustworthy outdoor journalism hasn’t gone anywhere.

In fact, it may be more important than ever.

As the industry balances tradition with rapidly changing digital platforms, leaders like Postol bring a valuable perspective, one that respects the heritage of outdoor writing while embracing the future.

For Athlon Untamed, it’s another reminder that great storytelling still matters. And for Megan Plete Postol, it’s proof that hard work, authenticity, and a passion for the outdoors can still open some pretty impressive doors.

Even if those doors occasionally lead to another board meeting.
