Michigan State Police Field SIG Sauer P320/M18 and P365 Pistols

The Michigan State Police has fully transitioned to the SIG Sauer P320/M18 pistol with a SIG Romeo M17 optic and FoxTrot2R light for its primary issued handgun system. The smaller, more concealable SIG Sauer P365 is now the agency’s secondary firearm.

“We are proud the Michigan State Police chose SIG Sauer as its primary and secondary sidearm,” began Tom Jankiewicz, executive vice president of Law Enforcement Sales for SIG Sauer. “The Michigan State Police conducted an exhaustive testing process to determine the selection of SIG Sauer pistols.

The Michigan State Police was established in 1917. Today it has roughly 1,900 officers and another 1,000 civilian personnel. Together they protect and serve nearly 10 million residents, along with visitors, across an area that covers 97,990 square miles.

In January 2017 the U.S. Army announced it selected the SIG M18—a variant of the company’s P320—as part of its Modular Handgun System program. It was adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps two years later.

The SIG Romeo M17 red-dot optic features a 2-MOA dot and 32-MOA circle. With a 7075 aluminum housing, it is enclosed, fully sealed and gas purged. The 700-lumen FoxTrot2R weaponlight rounds out a setup now being carried by Michigan State Police officers on patrol.

The P365 is a high-capacity, micro-compact pistol that provides the Michigan State Police capacity, concealability and capability. The ergonomic design of the P365 retains the characteristics of a full-size pistol, which makes the gun a popular choice for concealed carry on the consumer market.

SIG Sauer introduced the P365 early 2018. The striker-fired, 9mm handgun’s 10-round, flush-fitting magazine quickly caught the attention of enthusiasts. In 2019, the pistol was named “Handgun of the Year” in Shooting Illustrated’s annual Golden Bullseye Awards. The Indiana State Police selected it as its backup gun the same year.
