GiantMouse Branches out the Nimbus Line with New Scandi Grind Option

GiantMouse has returned to the Nimbus for a fourth version this year – really an expansion of the V3 that came out in 2023. The Nimbus V3 Scandi as its called sees the high-performance everyday carry folder rejiggered to incorporate the signature bushcraft knife blade grind.

The Nimbus has been around since 2018, and since that time it has received quite a few revisions. V2 came out in 2020; ‘revision’ is the correct word, too, because the bones stayed very much the same, with a switch to Elmax steel and custom phosphor bronze washers for the pivot action being two of the most notable changes. In 2023, the original V3 dropped, which tweaked the phosphor bronze washers again to a simpler flat build, and brought MagnaCut to the model for the first time.

The handle length on the V3 Scandi is 4.15 inches

The biggest difference here is that grind. Scandi grinds are also known as zero grinds because their primary bevel is the edge, running all the way out and thinning as they go in lieu of a defined secondary bevel. Scandi grinds can certainly do EDC chores but they particularly excel at working with wood, making them on obvious choice on bushcraft fixed blades – but in recent years we’ve been seeing them occasionally appearing on production folders too, and they add a welcome dimension to the capability of the genre.

New grind, and new steel. Yep, the Nimbus V3 Scandi does not come in MagnaCut, but instead S90V. This powder metallurgy steel has earned and maintained a formidable reputation for years, in particular thanks to its high edge-holding abilities. Combined with the innately sharp nature of the Scandi grind, the Nimbus V3 Scandi should be quite an animal when it comes to both indoor and outdoor cutting chores – and it’s cool to see designers Jen Anso and Jesper Voxnaes add another puukko-style element to the Nimbus, which was inspired by that historical Scandinavian cutting tool.

The Nimbus V3 Scandi is available now.
