Yesterday’s topic of discussion was the TOPS Silent Hero 4 Tanto, a full-sized tactical knife (albeit scaled down from its outdoors knife predecessor). Today we’re looking at another fixed blade, but one that is much smaller, and with a much different use category: the Boker Plus Li’l Friend Micro.
With a name like that, we don’t need to tell you that the Friend is not a tactical knife, nor a hard use one in the broader sense. No, this one is a EDC fixie, and one on the smaller side with a 1.38-inch drop point blade. That being said, the very fact that it is a fixed blade gives the Friend some muscle beyond that of similarly-sized folders, and thus it can be used for a broader swatch of jobs without fear of breaking it or otherwise pushing it beyond its limits. The D2 blade steel helps in this regard as well, given that it is a steel that has found success in both daily carry and hard use scenarios.
The size is most eccentric component of the Friend’s design – both the blade and handle are very sensible, almost traditional in their lines. Users will be very glad to see the pronounced finger groove beneath the guard, which will help secure their grip in addition to giving them maximal control over what is already a nimble and responsive little blade. The scales are tan G-10, and they’re laid on top of a full tang frame that extends a little further than they do, giving them the ever popular letterbox look and creating a sort of pseudo-chamfer around the perimeter.
As we talked about the KABAR EPT, an everyday carry fixed blade can be carried in different ways. Whereas a folder almost always goes in the pocket, a fixie could go in the pocket, or on the belt (in any number of orientations) – or, as is the case with the Li’l Friend Micro, it can be a neck knife, retained by a small Kydex sheath on a bead necklace. As is fitting for something that is going to be hanging around your neck, the Li’l Friend Micro keeps things light with a listed weight of just 1.34 oz. and a total length of 3.35 inches.
