Dodgers send Wrobleski against Cubs’ Boyd as both teams add arms before the trade deadline

Dodgers send Wrobleski against Cubs’ Boyd as both teams add arms before the trade deadline

The trade deadline is here. I am sure that excites a lot of people, including myself. We’ve already seen at least one massive trade, and we’ve seen a few others that have been interesting. There are definitely teams, like the White Sox, who are making a true push for the postseason with their moves. We knew the two teams in today’s game were going to be elite anyway, but both have made a move, and it will be interesting to see what else they do before the first pitch in this one.

The Los Angeles Dodgers made the move to get Tarik Skubal. Not only was he the best pitcher on the market, but he is the best pitcher potentially on the planet. Now a team that has won the past two World Series is more than primed for the third, and they will be getting to show him what it is like to be a Dodger before he hits free agency. Good for them. To be clear, the Dodgers are not bad for baseball. Cheap owners are bad for baseball. The Detroit Tigers organization is owned by people who have multiple billions of dollars in the bank, so they can’t cry poor.

Skubal won’t be starting today; that will come tomorrow. Instead, the team turns to Justin Wrobleski, who has been great this season with a 11-2 record, 2.88 ERA, and a 1.02 WHIP. These aren’t numbers he’s put up in a short period of time, either. He has tossed 112.2 innings this season. He did struggle in his most recent outing, going six innings and allowing five earned runs. Four of those came via the long ball, which really hasn’t been an issue for him this season. He faced the Cubs earlier this year, going six scoreless innings and allowing just four hits.

The Chicago Cubs are a Wild Card team, and that’s likely the best way to describe them overall. We know they are decent – their offense is among the best in the league. However, the team has been decimated by injuries. They had a thin pitching staff coming into the season and despite that being glaringly obvious to even casual followers, they didn’t do much to address it. The good news for Cubs fans is that they’ve fixed that issue a bit with some recent moves. They added Aaron Civale, and yesterday got a former Cy Young winner, Kevin Gausman.

He also won’t be making the start today, but it is a good addition to a team that is slowly getting some of their arms back. Matthew Boyd has returned to the rotation and has been a breath of fresh air for the Cubs. Since coming back, Boyd has gone 44 innings and allowed just nine earned runs. We got a really nice outing from him last start when he allowed no runs over seven innings and scattered just four hits. Dodgers hitters are batting just .200 against him in 100 at-bats.

This should be a really competitive game, and I think both pitchers are going to see that the opposition gets few opportunities. I think that the better option to take is the Cubs, but I’m not messing with the moneyline. I’m going to back the under 8.5 in this game. I just don’t see either starter giving up a ton of runs.
