The SIG M400 Forge – Bang For Your Buck

The SIG M400 Forge – Bang For Your Buck

How many ARs can a market take? We’ve been slowly run over by a wave of AR-15s at basically any budget price point. What can SIG do with the M400 Forge to stand out? That’s what I asked at Rendezvous 2026. The M400 series isn’t new, but it’s had several incarnations. The latest is the Forge, named, I assume, because this new model comes with a cold-hammer-forged barrel.

That’s just the start. Bottom line up front, the SIG M400 Forge is SIG’s attempt to provide a high-quality AR rifle, with a bevy of modern features, at a price point that’s tough to beat. The M400 Forge series is a surprisingly nice rifle that comes with everything but a sling and ammo for around $1,000.

The M400 Forge First Glance

The SIG M400 Forge appears at first glance to be a fairly basic modern rifle, but a bit basic. It’s a 16-inch barrel, forged uppers and lowers, M-LOK handguard. All the stuff we see on most modern rifles.

When you start to look a little closer, you see why the M400 Forge might be a standout AR-15 at its price point. The little details are taken care of, like a mid-length gas system. This reduces recoil just a hair, creates a smoother shooting rifle, and helps prevent the rifle from being gassy once it’s suppressed.

Beyond that, the lower features an ambidextrous safety and an ambidextrous magazine release. The bolt lock is in its standard position, but is larger than the average bear. The stock is a Magpul stock, but sadly lacks a QD cup.

The gun is topped off with a TriggerTech two-stage trigger as well as a large, ambidextrous charging handle.

SIG includes the ROMEO-MSR Gen 2 red dot with each rifle. Out of the box, you have an optic-equipped rifle for less than $1,000. Add a sling and some ammo, and you’re ready to rock and roll.

At the Range With The M400

I got to fire a few magazines worth of 5.56 at Rendezvous 2026 from 40 to about 100 yards. The SIG M400 Forge can certainly reach beyond those ranges, but that’s what we were limited to. I was able to hit anything I let the dot sit on.

This includes some IPSC-ish-sized steel, some small coyote targets, a random turkey target, and a mix of square and round steel targets varying in size. From 40 to 100 yards, I heard nothing but dings. It’s quite satisfying to hit 12-inch steel at 100 yards with a red dot on a rifle you’ve never fired before.

The TriggerTech trigger is about 3.5 pounds and flat. It’s incredibly smooth and crisp. The short pull and flat design make you want to go fast, and going fast didn’t do much to degrade my accuracy.

As you’d expect from any 5.56 rifle, the recoil is light and smooth. The rifle, with just a red dot, is nice and light and reminds me why we shouldn’t attach so much crap to our rifles. The M400 Forge might not be radically different from other ARs, but the little features add up to equal an excellent bang-for-your-buck rifle.
