State and local authorities are frantically searching for a suspect armed with a long gun who allegedly opened fire at family members and responding law enforcement in New Hampshire on Saturday, wounding a police officer and triggering a massive manhunt.

The suspect, Matthew J. Massey, 38, of Raymond, New Hampsire, allegedly shot at his family members just after 1:30 p.m. local time, and was later tracked down by officers.

He then opened fire on the responding officers, striking one of them, according to New Hampshire State Police.

The wounded Nottingham Police Department officer, who has not yet been publicly identified, was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and remains in serious condition.

Massey allegedly ran from the scene and additional law enforcement personnel responded to set up a perimeter around the area.

He is 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs just over 200 pounds, according to state police. He has black hair and hazel eyes, and is believed to be hiding in a large parcel of wooded land.

Authorities said they are using K-9s and aerial assets to search for Massey, who has active felony warrants for an attempted arson at his family’s home on Thursday.

During a news conference Saturday night, Raymond Police Department Chief Michael Labell said prior to Saturday’s shooting, officers were “working feverishly with other agencies in attempting to locate him.”

It is unclear if Massey has a prior criminal history.

Residents in the area have been asked to shelter in place while the search continues, ensuring they lock their doors and keep all keys inside.

Multiple roads remain closed, including Route 156.

“We know this incident has caused anxiety in the public, and we want everyone to be assured that we’re utilizing all available resources — which are substantial — to take this suspect into custody,” said New Hampshire State Police Maj. Brendan Davey.

“Numerous resources from the New Hampshire State Police, including our Investigative Services Bureau tactical resources and scores of federal, county and local law enforcement agencies, have been deployed to assist in this active operation,” he continued. “It’s all hands on deck, and it will remain ongoing until we have this suspect in custody.”
