Florida Sheriff After Homeowner Shoots Intruder: “Expect to Get Shot”

NASSAUVILLE, FL — A late-night attempted home burglary ended with gunfire on Clearwater Road last Wednesday when a Nassau County homeowner defended themselves against two intruders, one of whom was a juvenile male who was shot during the break-in attempt.

According to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), deputies responded to the residence just before 8:00 p.m. after receiving a call from the homeowner, who reported that two suspects had tried to force entry into their home. The homeowner stated they heard voices and movement outside and saw two individuals in the yard. One of the suspects then forced open the front door and shined a flashlight into the home.

Fearing for their safety, the homeowner fired two shots, striking one of the suspects, a juvenile male. The injured suspect was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.

The second suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Anson Shawn Drew of Fernandina Beach, fled the scene. With support from the NCSO’s Drone Unit, K9 Unit, and air support from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Drew was located and arrested a short time later. He has been charged with two counts of burglary and is being held at the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center on a bond exceeding $10,000.

The juvenile suspect will face charges pending the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.

Sheriff Bill Leeper offered a blunt warning in the aftermath of the incident:

“Anyone who breaks into someone’s home should expect to get shot. This is a serious crime with real consequences.”

Investigators have concluded that the homeowner’s actions were justified under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, which permits the use of deadly force in defense against an unlawful and forcible entry into a dwelling.

When a threat enters the home, there is no time to negotiate. This case underscores the importance of readiness and the legal protection afforded to citizens who defend themselves in their own homes. Homeowners have both the right and responsibility to protect themselves and their families. Ensuring quick access to a home defense firearm and training regularly in safe, responsible use can make the difference when seconds count.
