CATASAUQUA, PA — A resident in the borough of Catasauqua opened fire on two armed suspects during an attempted car theft early on January 13, 2026, striking one of them, according to the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

The incident occurred on Second Street during the overnight hours. Officials say the resident encountered two individuals allegedly attempting to steal their vehicle. Both suspects were reportedly wearing masks and dressed in black. Emergency radio traffic indicated that one of the suspects was armed with a knife and the other with a blunt object, possibly a metal bar.

When confronted, the resident discharged multiple rounds from a handgun, hitting one of the suspects at least once. That individual fled the scene and was later transported to a hospital in a private vehicle. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

At this time, no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing and is being led by the Catasauqua Borough Police Department with assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police Forensics Services Unit and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Christopher Wittik at 610-264-0577.

This incident highlights the serious risks involved when confronting criminal suspects, particularly when they are armed. In this case, the resident was outnumbered by two individuals, one reportedly carrying a knife and the other wielding a blunt object. Despite the outcome favoring the defender, the situation could have easily turned deadly.

Engaging multiple armed suspects is an extremely dangerous scenario, even for someone who is armed and trained. While self-defense may be legally justified in the face of an imminent threat, gun owners should recognize that the decision to intervene carries real risks to personal safety. Whenever possible, prioritizing distance, calling law enforcement, and avoiding direct confrontation may be the safest option—unless there is no other choice to prevent serious injury or death.
