Buying A Safe — Avoid These Gun Safe Mistakes

A gun safe is designed to prevent unauthorized access to your tools and keep you and your community protected. These storage solutions come in a variety of installation methods and are typically categorized by their different locking mechanisms. When determining what type of safe is right for you, it can be easy to overlook or ignore certain features that are required to properly protect your tools. To ensure you are taking full advantage of your firearm vault, here are five common gun safe mistakes you should avoid at all costs.

Gun Safe Mistakes

Maintenance

Gun safes are susceptible to dust, wear, and corrosion, meaning that regular maintenance is essential to keep them functioning efficiently. To help extend the longevity of your vault, dust and wipe down interior and exterior areas, and inspect for loosened bolts and latches, tightening them when necessary. It is also recommended to use electric dehumidifiers or desiccant packs, preventing rust from damaging your firearms and other belongings.

As a general rule, inspect your safe every three months. Safes that are frequently used should be professionally examined once a year, while those that are rarely used should be serviced every two to three years.

Measure

One crucial mistake you’ll want to avoid when purchasing a safe is failing to measure properly. Many people focus on the dimensions of the safe and its intended location, but neglect to consider the size of hallways and doorways, which can lead to installation issues. Before you invest in a safe, plan its route and double-check that it will fit through all entryways.

Improper Installation

An essential step in installing a safe is securely anchoring it. However, many people skip properly bolting their firearm security unit, because they believe it is unnecessary and that the weight of a safe alone is enough to discourage theft. In reality, a gun safe that is not bolted down can be moved and tipped over, enabling criminals to pry it open and gain access to your belongings. To keep your valuables protected, it is best to mount your safe to either the floor or wall.

Choosing a Location

When selecting where to place your gun safe, it is recommended to choose an area that is discreet, low profile, and climate controlled. One mistake to avoid is putting your safe in a location that experiences frequent temperature fluctuations, such as a garage or attic. These thermal changes can lead to increased humidity, resulting in your firearms rusting. Instead, choose an environment, such as a closet or bedroom, where the humidity is between 30% to 50%. Provided that the area stays dry, basements are another great option to consider. Using dehumidifiers, desiccant packs, electric dehumidifier rods, and vapor corrosion inhibitor bags can also help prevent moisture damage.

Lighting Features

An overlooked feature of many gun safes is proper lighting, which is typically available as built-in LED lights or aftermarket kits. Many owners skip out on this feature because they believe the existing room lighting is adequate enough to see their valuables. However, a well-lit safe can help you easily identify your firearms and belongings, without any question, giving you the advantage to quickly access your tools in an emergency.

Parting Thoughts

Overall, the type of gun storage that you choose is an investment, meaning that proper care is essential. By establishing a regular maintenance schedule, measuring your vault’s transport route, prioritizing proper installation, choosing the right location, and including important features like lighting, you can get the most out of your gun safe and prevent unnecessary complications.
