Homeowner Forced to Shoot Intruder After Acting Erratically and Not Heeding Warnings to Leave

LAS VEGAS, NV — A homeowner shot and killed a man who was attempting to break into their residence early Thursday morning, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred on September 26, around 7:40 a.m., in the 6400 block of Placer Drive, located near West Harmon Avenue and South Torrey Pines Drive. The homeowner, a person in their 20s, called 911 to report the break-in. As the 911 dispatcher was on the line, a gunshot was heard, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Homicide Lt. Jason Johansson explained during a press briefing.

The homeowner told police the man, estimated to be in his 30s or 40s, was acting “extremely irrational” and refused repeated demands to leave the property. When the intruder moved toward the doorway where the homeowner was positioned, the homeowner felt compelled to fire, striking the man.

Responding officers arrived to find the intruder in the driveway with a gunshot wound. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to Johansson, there was no known relationship between the homeowner and the intruder, and the homeowner had only recently moved into the house. Surveillance footage from a nearby home was obtained, and police have indicated that they do not expect to make any arrests pending further review by the Clark County District Attorney’s office.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have asked anyone with information to reach out to LVMPD Homicide Section or Crime Stoppers.

In self-defense situations like this, it’s crucial to remember that the right to use deadly force hinges on the presence of an imminent threat of death or serious injury. In this case, the homeowner’s decision was based on the intruder’s erratic behavior and his movement toward the homeowner after refusing to leave. Always make sure to assess threats carefully and call law enforcement immediately when possible.
