Jack Wolf’s newest project hit the streets last week, a collaboration fixed blade called the Prickly Pear. The Pear should go down smoothly for anybody who is a fan of the EDC fixed blade concept, or nice leather sheaths.
Within the EDC fixed blade sub-genre, there’s a sub-sub-genre for scalpel-style knives. It’s a concept that may seem strange at first but, when you consider that a scalpel, by its very nature, is designed to deliver a lot of cutting power in a small, ergonomics-forward format, it’s easy to see how this medical implement made the transition from the operating table to the pocket.
The Prickly Pear, however, which is designed by Taylor Cortes of Taylored by Cortes leather works, is not your average scalpel. Instead of the bellied drop point on the standard form, what we’ve got here is a tanto scalpel. It’s just 2 inches long but it’s a pretty stout little guy, with a pronounced secondary edge in the American style and a dished out grind on that edge. Moreover it’s made from S45VN, so performance will be buttoned up across the board.
Whereas the Prickly Pear deviates from the scalpel norm bladewise, it sticks to the medical textbook much closer in terms of the ergos, with an elongated handle – over 3 inches long – to comfortable house a full four-finger grip during use. The scales are made from G-10 or Micarta, and all four varieties come with a stitched leather sheath courtesy, of course, of Taylored by Cortes. Also worth noting that this Jack Wolf production is made stateside in partnership with California-based Misfits Machining.
